Who else, besides me, took advantage of all the deals after Thanksgiving? I'm not your traditional, "go into to WalMart with vaseline and boxing gloves, ready for whatever" type of girl! I got some pretty cool deals on Cyber Monday, and this new bob was one of them! I've been looking for a bob to serve as an alternate protective style, because the 20in RPG Show wig I purchased prior was more so for special occasions than an everyday wear.
Initially, pulling the wig out the box, I was disappointed. It looked more like a wrap than a bob. The magazine that came with the unit and YouTube videos helped a lot, because I took my Husband's clippers to it and achieved the A-Symmetrical look I was originally going for.
The wig came a brush, magazine, and wig cap. However, I used my own black cap that blended better with my scalp and looked natural when I lined up my part with the lace part on the bob. I used Hicks edge control to lay down my edges near the part
Of course I spoke all about it on my YouTube channel so be sure to check it out, share it, comment, & give it a THUMBS UP! If you're interested in purchasing your own unit, go to RPGShow.com and remember to apply the code: "KeturahJaneen" to get $30 OFF!
Until next time,
I’m so excited about this particular post! I just purchased my very first full lace wig! As a naturalista, I’ve had this stigma since I did my big chop that “natural is natural” point blank period! How naïve, I know! As I’ve grown wise in the natural community, I’ve seen beautiful healthy hair: colored, dyed, weaved up, and so on. You know why? Because these women take care of their hair through routine moisturizing, trimmed ends, and low-manipulation, PROTECTIVE styles!
My hair goal is to be able to stretch my mane (because I have high shrinkage, 4C hair) down to my waist! My Mom has left the odds in my favor for that goal to be a reality with her locs reaching to her waist. However, realistically my hair grows at its best when I’m not in it. I did what I anyone living in 2015 would: go to YouTube! I researched wigs and came across some positive reviews from RPG Show. After an hour of indecisive browsing, I finally chose and purchased stock number “CLS026-S”. The ordering process is safe and easy. As a first-time buyer, RPG Show deducts $25 off your purchase. However, you'll get $30 off if you apply coupon code: "KeturahJaneen"
It arrived in about a week via DHL. Please note: once you cut the lace off the wig, it is now non-returnable! This hair is soft and has great density! It’s not too thin or thick. It’s easy to manage and the curls last. Of course I did a review on YouTube so you all can check it out. Comment & give it a “thumbs up” if you like it! I see more of the full lace wigs in the future for protective styling. Let me know what you guys think.
I've wanted to change up my wash-day regimen for a while now, but I didn't know where to start. I went back to the basics. When I first chopped off all of my hair, I used Shea Moisture's products. Since then, their selection has gotten bigger. Indecisively, I bought products from three separate Shea Moisture categories: Yucca & Plantain (strengthening shampoo), Jamaican Black Castor Oil (conditioning masque), and Coconut & Hibiscus (soufflé for twists). All of which is on sale at Target!
Shampoo & Rinse. I don't how many of you all do this, but I use my finger tips to massage all the dirt out of my hair. I have a bad childhood experience from WRECK-LESS hair stylists that would wash my hair, and it felt as if they were trying to scratch my brain out! Oh, and don't let them have a hangnail and catch your hair with it! Ouch! I cringe just thinking about it! So, yea... I take that step seriously: massage with your fingertips! Thank me later.
Apply Conditioner & Sit Under Dryer. I used a NICE amount of conditioner on each section, and was very thorough on my roots & ends! Also, you can use this time to detangle as your hair is at its easiest to manipulate with the conditioning masque in it. I enjoyed this step just because my "true" curls showed up and showed out! I twisted all four sections, put on my shower cap, and sat under the dryer for 30 minutes. This is called "Deep Conditioning". The heat/steam that produces under the shower cap from the damp hair opens up the follicles and allows the conditioner to work its magic.
The soufflé was quite the experience! It smelled great and had the texture true to "soufflé". As I twisted my hair, it wasn't shrinking like it would normally do with a moisturizing crème. When I was all done, I almost didn't like my results. It wasn't until the next morning when I fell in LOVE with two-strand twists all over again. Even my Husband said he noticed a difference and he liked it too! All in all, I came up with a new routine for washday that's thorough, effective, and leaves me smelling like tropical paradise, fruit and coconuts!
Wash the Conditioner out with cold water. Studies have shown that washing hair in hot, steamy water damages the hair shaft. So eventually you'll find yourself with hair that is brittle and prone to breakage. A cold water rinse does the opposite of what sitting under heat does. The cold water closes up your hair follicles, leaving your mane shiny and healthy. Wash your hair in the coldest water you can stand. Surprisingly, I can stand cold water so it works for me. Don't catch hypothermia and then tell your Doc you read this on my blog LOL! Know your limit.
I loved the way the conditioning masque left my hair! Have you ever stopped going to the gym for a while, then decided to go back? My hair felt like that first day back at the gym LOL! It was soft, shiny, and since it was already in sections, it dried faster. I personally don't use blow dryers, so after I washed out the conditioner, I applied my (not so) secret oil concoction, braided it into 4 braids and let it air dry for an hour... sitting outside... in TX heat! Once it was dry, I used the to do the Curling Gel Soufflé (for the first time) to do two-strand twists.
I often get a lot of compliments on my skin and it compelled me to share my cleansing regimen. It’s really no secret and is quite easy. Never have I had to struggle with "problem skin". (I wish there was another term for it) However, my skin is sensitive. Whenever summer peaks around the corner I get “heat bumps”, a hormonal pimple here and there before/during my cycle, and my body rejects any high fructose, carbonated drink right onto my face!
A couple of years back I purchased my very own Clarisonic Mia 2 brush after seeing celebrity stylist, June Ambrose, share it on her Instagram. I immediately searched for reviews to see if it was worth $150… yea, I know! A little pricey, but with so many great stories, I ended up purchasing one for myself. You only get one body; you must invest in it and take care of it. I’ve been using this jewel ever since! Initially, I would cleanse my face with the Mia 2 twice daily, but now I use it about 3x a week. I rinse my face with warm water, apply my facial cleanser and gently scrub my face in circular motions with the brush. There's a high and low setting for the speed of the brush, and it alerts you when to move on to another area of your face. Brushes are encouraged to be replaced every 3 months. ( I just bought a pack of four for the year).
My Husband and I faithfully cleanse with St. Ives Apricot scrub. A few months ago I purchased this Uhh-maayyy-ZING liquid African black soap from Naturel Lyfe Essentials! It leaves your face clean without the dry, tight feeling. You only need a few drops to form a nice lathering to deeply cleanse your skin. Naturel Lyfe Essentials also has 100% refined whipped shea butter. I usually follow up with a small amount of the coconut mango shea butter as a moisturizer.
Coconut oil is the natural woman’s go-to for everything! My line sister actually passed this particular rule of thumb on to me. Don’t let a facial breakout come from something so simple like forgetting to remove your makeup before bed. Grab your jar of coconut oil and cotton balls. The makeup comes off easily without harshly irritating the skin.
Water, water, and more water! Aim for eight to ten 8oz. servings of water a day. There’s not much solid research that states drinking lots of water can make your skin “glow”, but there are studies that have proved lack of water consumption (dehydration) causes skin to become dry, flaky and be more prone to wrinkles. I must admit that I’m not a fan of drinking water, but adding lemons, cucumbers, mint, strawberries, etc. to my water helps a ton with consumption.
In a nutshell: drink water daily, remove makeup before bed, and have a routine of cleansing and moisturizing your face. Take care of your body and it will take care of you! Remember, 1 Corinthians 6:19 reads, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own”. Be blessed & be encouraged!
Dealing with natural hair is all about trial and error. What products works for you and your hair type? What can you afford? What are you permitted to wear at work? What’s the climate of your location? Whether it’s high humidity in Mississippi, blazing heat in Texas, freezing cold in Michigan, or wet & rainy in Washington, you’ll know what’s best for your hair; only through trial and error.
There are a few products I want to share that have helped me with my two-strand twists. Being active duty, two-strand twists are a blessing to me! It’s within regulation, it’s cute, and it’s a protective style: I call it a TRIPLE threat! I can do it in under two hours: that’s including procrastination, playing with Caesar & Bella, snacking on food, and watching my HGtv favorites! When I'm ready to take it down, that's a whole new style (twist outs).
Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue
I used Miss Jessie’s a couple of weeks ago and fell in love! Her meringue has a lovely, sweet smell to it and it truly brings out the curl in my twists. The only disadvantage I had was after taking out my twists, it left bitty clumps of residue (I did it on dirty hair too). Nothing too major, but still worth the product! Also, the humidity had my twist outs shrink up a bit, but I'm sure Eco Styling gel added to this product as I twist would protect from that. It is the most expensive at about $18 a pop at Target.
ORS Olive Oil Smooth-N-Hold Pudding
I use this with olive oil Eco Styling gel. They work hand in hand because the pudding serves as the moisturizer and gel holds it together. I’ll get a dime-sized amount of gel, apply to the section I’m about to twist, then apply the pudding as I twist. What I love about this is that once your hair dries, that gel holds your twists together all day long! It stands the test of time, even in humid weather. The residue is little to none and the twist-outs are flawless! It's all yours for around $5 at your local beauty supply.
Cantu Coconut Curling Cream
This product is the first that got me to realize my hair can actually do a lil something! Seriously, my definition was on point, the residue was non-existent, and it left a shine like no other. The coconut oil infused in the product is probably what got me to love it. It’s definitely one of top go-to products. I even use it when I do "no heat" perm-rod curls. Grab this for about $8 at your local beauty supply.
I need to throw out this disclaimer. I do my twists on DRY hair! I tried to oil my scalp once and was not happy with my results. My twists were unraveling and the definition was garbage. Wait until afterwards to oil your scalp! Also, just like all two-strand twists, there is residue as you twist, but it goes away as your hair dries.
Take the time to learn your hair, and remember practice makes perfect!
