My little pumpkin is 2 months already! I'm just getting around to sharing his denim themed nursery with you all. Sorry it took so long. I suppose I'm just getting the hang of this new thing called "Mommy-hood". I have the video of his tour up on my YouTube channel, but here is where I'll give the details of everything in his nursery.
My Mom-in-Love painted the room back in August when I had my baby shower. The color is Ralph Lauren's Indigo Denim. There's a light blue base coat that goes on the wall first. Once it's dry, the dark blue goes on and there's a special brush used to give it that "denim look."
G-Ma Elizabeth purchased the crib from Wayfair. I got the elephant sheet set from Amazon for $80. It came with the fitted sheet, skirt, bumpers, mobile, blanket (inside crib), and 3 elephant drawings that hang on the wall. I didn't put them up because it would have been "elephant overkill". G-Ma Elizabeth sent this stylish denim and leather hamper. His name was a quick and easy (ok, maybe just easy) DIY project. I took old jeans, cut them up, and hot-glued them to cardboard letters. I was planning on painting the edges white, but never got around to doing that. Either way, it came out super cute!
This is my attempt at keeping Gianni's clothes and things organized. The storage boxes were purchased from Target. Overall, this is my favorite room in the whole house. I shared my Pinterest board of nurseries with my Mom-in-Love. She really went above and beyond to bring my vision of rustic, denim, and white to life! Tell me, what's YOUR favorite part of this room? A Soror and mentor of mine needed an upgrade to one of her guest rooms. Her home, and every room in it, is beautiful so the challenge was on to live up to and exceed her expectations. Initially, I suggested going with a burnt shade of orange to add a bit of pizzazz to her home. Other colors in the home include a soothing red velvet, smooth cream, and soft yellow. After a few trips to Home Depot, we decided on Behr’s “Acapulco Sun” and “Inferno” with a designed pattern using Ralph Lauren’s “Palladium Silver” as an accent on one wall.
(Due to lighting, some pictures may appear more red than burnt orange.)
Because the stencil I used was a bit small, the accent wall took about a week to complete. My weeklong timeline includes working a full 12 hours and going to the gym during the week. (Army Strong, HOOAH!) I will write a separate blog for the accent wall. It’s fairly easy, but there are particular tips and tricks I use that go a long way.
What’s unique about my client is the collection of timeless pieces from the countries in which she’s lived and visited. The South Korean mask blends and contrasts perfectly with the wall. Just because I’m obsessed with burlap: the African artwork was attached to the burlap canvases. The nail head studded, burlap “J” was a must-have! Along with the pillows and mirror, these were all great finds from Ross.
I refurbished the bed and nightstands using Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in “Coco”. I also added silver nail head trim to the top of each and changed the knobs, giving the nightstands a more modern look. The curtains (Target) were a no-brainer as they match the design of the accent wall. My favorite piece in this room, believe it or not, is the elephant pillow. I purchased it from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. It’s the small detail in the center of the room that ties all of the colors together.
Thanks again to my Dear Soror who allowed me to utilize my talents in her home! She was my first client, and I look forward to many more consulting, refurbishing, and designing in my future. XoXo <3
When you have family scattered across the country and you're active duty military, it does get a little hard to keep up with everyone. My Husband and I make our best efforts to attend reunions and visit family at every opportunity we get. The old saying, "Home is Where the Heart Is" rings true in our home. My family wall carries memories I can instantly be reminded of whenever I walk pass. I love a space that tells a story when you walk in. My "unique touch" that allows me to transform a section, area, or room includes picture frames, lighting, plants and scents of candles. If you're in need of sprucing, follow these broad guidelines and adjust where you feel necessary.
Let's begin with your platform or foundation. Are you working with an office desk, coffee table, or nightstand? The size will determine how much you can fit on top without cluttering. This particular cabinet above was refurbished by my Mom-in-"Love". She's inspired me to take my creative skills more seriously and take on more challenging projects. Check out more of my Mom's work here.
Candles are a different story. I personally own $3 candles I've purchased from the dollar store that smell better and burn longer than some expensive candles I own. Of course candle shapes, scents, and colors are left to personal preference. I love bare candles that allow me to either display the art on it or get a cool container it can go in. Target has a beautiful collection of candles and holders. They also have the wax burners that can serve as a light like the one above. I like the relaxed mood it gives off while adding a touch of romance to the room.
I'll wrap this up with floral decor: they add the beauty. I own a few artificial flowers that look realistic and every blue moon (when my Husband doesn't do it just because) I buy real flowers. And if you haven't guessed by now, I absolutely LOVE sunflowers! If you decide on plants, choose wisely in selecting one that will have longevity inside your home. If your space is by a window that will get a lot of light, go for something in the Succulent family: Aloe Vera or Cactus. If there's limited natural light go with a Jade plant or English Ivy.
All in all, I've had to take this one day at a time. Some things will naturally come to you and watching HGtv will most certainly inspire you to switch things up. Whether it's photos of family or a bunch of encouraging words in a frame, be patient and dig deep within yourself to discover what you'd like to showcase in your space that reflects YOU.
