“Acapulco Retreat”: Bedroom Makeover

A Soror and mentor of mine needed an upgrade to one of her guest rooms. Her home, and every room in it, is beautiful so the challenge was on to live up to and exceed her expectations. Initially, I suggested going with a burnt shade of orange to add a bit of pizzazz to her home. Other colors in the home include a soothing red velvet, smooth cream, and soft yellow. After a few trips to Home Depot, we decided on Behr’s “Acapulco Sun” and “Inferno” with a designed pattern using Ralph Lauren’s “Palladium Silver” as an accent on one wall.
(Due to lighting, some pictures may appear more red than burnt orange.)

Because the stencil I used was a bit small, the accent wall took about a week to complete. My weeklong timeline includes working a full 12 hours and going to the gym during the week. (Army Strong, HOOAH!) I will write a separate blog for the accent wall. It’s fairly easy, but there are particular tips and tricks I use that go a long way.
What’s unique about my client is the collection of timeless pieces from the countries in which she’s lived and visited. The South Korean mask blends and contrasts perfectly with the wall. Just because I’m obsessed with burlap: the African artwork was attached to the burlap canvases. The nail head studded, burlap “J” was a must-have! Along with the pillows and mirror, these were all great finds from Ross.

I refurbished the bed and nightstands using Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in “Coco”. I also added silver nail head trim to the top of each and changed the knobs, giving the nightstands a more modern look. The curtains (Target) were a no-brainer as they match the design of the accent wall. My favorite piece in this room, believe it or not, is the elephant pillow. I purchased it from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. It’s the small detail in the center of the room that ties all of the colors together.

Thanks again to my Dear Soror who allowed me to utilize my talents in her home! She was my first client, and I look forward to many more consulting, refurbishing, and designing in my future. XoXo <3

Oh, my. Tell your client that I'll be there next weekend to officially break-in her "new" guest room! It looks so warm, serene, and inviting.... Great job, Keturah!

"And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; and bring forth abundantly in the earth; and multiply therein." (Genesis 9:7 KJV) -
Many people think of having babies with this verse but I think of it as using and sharing your talents. The makeover is beautiful. I'm so glad you found your niche. It reminds me of our last heart-to-heart about changing your major before you commissioned. You have a gift and determination that will take you far!
