You knew it was coming! Why didn’t I make this the first blog post on my site? I honestly did not want it to be misconstrued that KeturahJaneen.com is strictly about hair: because it’s not! Since I’ve posted about various topics that share my interest, I can catch you up to speed on my natural hair journey; what motivated me, what I’ve learned during the process, and where I am now.
During my senior year of college, I had been interning with Microsoft; I was so anxious to graduate/commission, and my (then, close friend) Husband and I had started to take our relationship to another level! I let go of dead weight & I could feel God moving in my life. He was preparing to take me places I’d never gone before and I was READY! I had matured quite a bit. Learning a lot about what “Keturah” likes; things I loved to do! As my confidence grew more and more each day, my hair was the only thing I felt needed a change to match where I was headed. I had been looking at natural styles for a while thinking how I could pull this off. After much prayer (and screenshots of my favorite naturalistas), I decided to do the big chop!
- Embrace your TWA (teeny weeny afro) stage! Man, what I wouldn’t give to go back to that stage! At your first impression, you met ME! There was nothing to physically hide about my appearance. All of your facial features come to the forefront and people have nothing to be distracted by when talking face-to-face with you. I was so self-conscious about having big ears that I NEVER wore any dangling or hoop earrings. About a week after the big chop, my Mom bought my first official “post-chop earrings”. They were big, round, wooden beauties! I eventually got comfortable with wearing them. I’m still working on that insecurity to this day.
I am now learning the importance of keeping my ends trimmed. My Mom’s hair is down to her butt, so she’s my daily inspiration: I will get there (or close to it) one day! This is for all the naturalistas who’ve inboxed me about hairstyles. All of my sistahs who’ve asked about my hair care regimens, and the ladies who ask what I do to get my hair to grow. Don’t give up on your hair. Learn it, appreciate it, enjoy it, and be patient!
Welcome! And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose. [Romans 8:28] Join me as I share a compilation of all things beautiful in my life & how I live a healthy lifestyle through happiness from within!
